Necropsies led by Tony Goldberg in Uganda's Kibale national park identified human metapneumovirus as the cause of the lethal outbreak among chimpanzees, despite the challenges of finding fresh bodies.
Molecular testing confirmed that human metapneumovirus (HMPV) caused severe pneumonia in the infected chimpanzees, leading to a high mortality rate of over 12% in Stella's community.
