The brain implant trial conducted on Oran Knowlson has resulted in an 80% reduction in seizures, significantly improving his quality of life and cognitive function.
The innovative neurostimulator, about the size of a mobile phone battery, works by delivering constant electrical signals to prevent seizures by blocking abnormal brain impulses.
Plans are in place to fit three more children with the brain implant under a pilot scheme, with an expanded trial to follow, potentially paving the way for NHS approval.
Development of the Picostim implant, spearheaded by Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London, may lead to widespread availability within four to five years.
