The plant Tmesipteris oblanceolata contains a whopping 160 billion base pairs, surpassing the human genome by more than 50 times, and exceeding the previous record holder by 11 billion base pairs.
The discovery of the fork fern's colossal genome raises questions about how the plant manages its genetic material and how the cellular machinery accesses necessary genes amidst the vast amount of non-coding DNA.
