Tests confirmed that avian botulism caused the death of dozens of ducks at Fairmount Park, linked to low water levels and excessive algae.
Botulism outbreaks in birds, while serious for wildlife, usually pose a low health risk to humans, according to the United States Geological Survey.
After performing necropsies, authorities found avian botulism type C in the ducks, which may have ingested toxic algae or decaying plant matter.
City officials stated the water levels are now back to normal, and treatments will begin to eliminate algae and restore the lakes' health.
