Police reported over 1,600 arrests in a nationwide operation aimed at curbing the illicit drug trade, highlighting a significant ongoing demand for illegal substances in Australia.
The operation, dubbed Operation Vitreus, resulted in the seizure of approximately 1,400 kg of illicit drugs, alongside 2,500 cannabis plants, emphasizing the scale of drug trafficking.
Dave Cowan, a police spokesman, noted, 'Over $93M worth of illicit drugs were seized... it aptly highlights the seemingly insatiable demand for illicit substances in Australia.'
Participating police forces stated, 'Illicit drug use contributes to high levels of community harm through drug driving, drug-fuelled assaults, and heightened risk-taking.'
