The Monterey Bay Aquarium started as a local educational initiative, but it has transformed into a global center for ocean conservation, emphasizing the importance of marine life.
Our first year, we had over two million people, which is about twice what we were anticipating. Through word of mouth, we developed such a following worldwide.
The inspiration for the aquarium stemmed from our experiences at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station; being marine biologists, we wanted to share the beauty of our local nature.
Originally, we thought we were just building something for the Monterey community; we had no idea the aquarium would gain such a broad, worldwide appeal.
