Edgar Wright masterfully uses the tension between Sean's mundane life and the chaos of a zombie apocalypse to comment on the dangers of conformity, hinting that perhaps we are already zombies in absence of a meaningful life.
Without a definitive genre, Shaun of the Dead transcends typical horror films by weaving humor and horror together seamlessly, paving the way for a new interpretation of both. This film is as much about personal transformation as it is about a literal undead menace.
