A decade after Pope Francis' encyclical 'Laudato Si' called for an end to fossil fuel investments, over 1,600 institutions have pledged to divest, including 384 Catholic entities. The encyclical urges churches to choose environmentally friendly alternatives. James Buchanan, from the Laudato Si’ movement, notes that total divestment figures are often undisclosed. Notably, Germany's Catholic Bank fur Kirche und Caritas and the Pax-Bank have taken steps towards divestment, with commitments to reduce emissions and advocate similar actions by other institutions, reflecting growing environmental responsibility within the church.
"We feel a strong responsibility not only toward our customers and ourselves to contribute to climate protection, or at the very least, to avoid worsening climate change," Tommy Piemonte told DW.
"It isn't possible to give the total amount divested by faith institutions, as they generally prefer not to disclose this information publicly," said James Buchanan.
