About 19 million children under five suffer from severe acute malnutrition annually, resulting in 400,000 deaths. Plumpy'nut, a therapeutic peanut paste, has been available since 1996 and is crucial for recovery. Despite initial high prices, Nutriset has managed to lower costs while protecting its patent rights. A recent study details how different stakeholders collaborated to tackle the pricing issue and maintain a consistent supply of this vital food. By 2019, Nutriset's price was significantly lower than competitors, demonstrating a successful model of profit and humanitarian efforts.
Contrary to the expectations of activists and many humanitarian NGOs, this for-profit company managed to reduce its prices down to $39 per box of Plumpy'nut packets by 2019.
Nutriset, a French company, was founded by Michel Lescanne. He was one of two scientists who invented this product in 1996.
