Sophie Meredith, a patient from Telford diagnosed with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) during pregnancy, expressed gratitude to blood donors for an innovative NHS treatment derived from plasma. With the NHS now able to produce immunoglobulin locally, reliance on imports has reduced, marking a significant healthcare development in over 25 years. Meredith highlighted the crucial role of plasma in her treatment, receiving over 27 bags during her emergency care. Fellow patient Paula Costin also noted the importance of immunoglobulin in her battle against blood cancers, emphasizing the vital impact of plasma donations.
I'm so grateful to everyone who donates blood; you are not just helping people with your red blood cells, now the plasma in your blood donation is helping people too.
I remember getting a leaflet and it said without plasma exchange there is a 90% mortality rate from an acute TTP episode.
It escalated so quickly; as soon as I got to A&E there was a doctor waiting for me, so I knew it was serious.
Immunoglobulin has given me the chance to fight against my blood cancers and boost my immune system.
