'Neglected tropical diseases' now face even more neglect
Briefly

For nearly two decades, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked globally to combat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affecting over a billion people primarily in extreme poverty. However, funding cuts initiated by the Trump administration threaten the continuation of this work, specifically a $114.5 million reduction in NTD-related budgets. These cuts could result in nearly a billion dollars worth of medicines going undelivered or expiring. NTDs, which include 21 distinct diseases and heavily impact poor populations, have been prioritized by global health organizations for their cost-effective treatment interventions.
The control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is recognized as one of the most cost-effective interventions in global health, significantly benefiting impoverished populations.
If the $114.5 million funding cut by the Trump administration isn't restored, nearly a billion dollars' worth of medicines from private companies may go undelivered, jeopardizing global health efforts.
