Global Climate Risk Index Ranks 188 Countries by Vulnerability and Access to Finance
Briefly

Researchers at the Columbia Climate School, backed by the Rockefeller Foundation, developed the Climate Finance (CliF) Vulnerability Index. This tool assesses countries' vulnerabilities to climate-related and human-caused hazards alongside their access to financing for recovery and prevention. The interactive index highlights 188 nations, pinpointing 65 high-risk countries, particularly in Africa, aiming to improve resource targeting for disaster mitigation. With rising climate shocks, many vulnerable nations struggle with debt, limiting their financial resilience, signaling a need for new assessment standards.
Climate shocks are becoming more frequent and intense, yet many of the nations facing the highest threats are also heavily indebted, limiting their access to financial markets.
The CliF Vulnerability Index provides a novel and more realistic picture of risk, including access to financing to address climate vulnerabilities.
