This year, the NIH has seen a dramatic rise in the withdrawal of grant applications for research funding, largely due to the closing of around 100 funding areas. As a result, over 2,500 applications have been withdrawnâdouble that of the past two years. This trend is leading to setbacks in medical research, especially for young and diverse researchers. The NIH's budget cuts and frozen research funds compound these issues, with experts warning about the potential loss of future scientific innovation.
The increase in withdrawals seems to be mostly because the NIH quietly closed around 100 funding categories in February and March, supporting diverse researchers.
We risk losing an entire generation of young scientists that are really going to be the people driving tomorrow's discoveries and cures, says Carole LaBonne.
