A recent analysis reveals that approximately 40% of contracts canceled by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, do not result in real savings for taxpayers. Of the 1,125 contracts reviewed, around 417 had already been fully obligated, meaning their cancellation won't save money. Despite this, DOGE portrays these cuts as significant savings, misleading the public. Legal expert Charles Tiefer criticized the department's claims, stating that terminating these contracts accomplishes little and does not achieve any beneficial policy goals.
"According to the analysis, 417 of the 1,125 contracts that are listed as having recently been canceled account for agreements that have already been fully obligated."
"It's like confiscating used ammunition after it's been shot when there's nothing left in it," Tiefer said. "It doesn't accomplish any policy objective."
