Yanks' Cole takes next step, throws off mound
Briefly

Cole threw off a mound for the first time since being shut down in mid-March after being diagnosed with nerve irritation and edema in his pitching elbow. The Yankees have not provided a timetable for his return, but he is eligible to come off the injured list on May 27.
Luis Gil, Cole's replacement in the rotation, delivered an impressive performance with a 3.19 ERA in 31 innings across six starts. The Yankees' rotation, despite Cole's absence, has been impressive with a 3.43 ERA through Friday, ranking ninth in the majors.
