As Chambliss rounded first, bedlam broke out at the stadium. The series likely would not have needed Chambliss' clutch heroics if not for an old Yankee nemesis. George Brett stepped to the plate with his Royals down 6-3 in the eighth. Down, until a titanic Brett home run that is. I'm not sure any sport does high drama the way baseball does. I can only imagine watching this game live.
Chambliss turned on the first pitch he saw and drove it deep into right center field. It was bedlam in the Bronx indeed as Chambliss rounded the bases, having sent the Yankees to the World Series for the first time since 1964. Chambliss' amazing series-clinching roundtripper was the first of its kind in Yankee history and only the second instance in big league history.
