In sharp contrast to the one-sided slugfest in the series opener, this was a classic pitchers' duel between Nestor Cortes and Bryce Miller and the relievers to follow them.
Cortes just edging out Miller by holding the Mariners scoreless, and they’d need every ounce of that effort to hold off Seattle.
Just as quickly as his efforts provided the Yankees the game's opening run, some suspect defense in center almost gave it right back to the Mariners.
This allowed Cortes to strike out Mitch Haniger on a backdoor cutter to strand the runners in place and preserve the lead.
