The Yankees return home having suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses in the first two games of the World Series. The pair of final innings have been a microcosm of the series as a whole, Freddie Freeman walking off Game 1 with a grand slam in the 10th inning before the Yankees stranded the bases loaded in a two-run deficit to end Game 2. They now face a must-win Game 3.
Clarke Schmidt has performed ably in his two postseason starts, holding the Royals to two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings in Game 3 of the ALDS and the Guardians to two runs on five hits in 4.2 innings in Game 3 of the ALCS. Given how the Yankees have struggled against Dodgers starters, it might require something special from Schmidt tonight.
Walker Buehler has been a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this postseason, getting shelled for six runs on seven hits in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Padres before shutting out the Mets for four innings with six strikeouts in Game 3 of the NLCS. It appears he learned his lesson from start to start, so we'll see if he sticks with that strategy tonight.
The Yankees make just one change to the lineup from the first two games, subbing in Jose Trevino for the struggling Austin Wells. So far, it's been Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton, and others who have delivered the team’s offensive production.
