When the St. Louis Cardinals come to the Bronx to face the New York Yankees this weekend, it will be a showdown between the two most successful teams in baseball history.
Ruth posted a ridiculous .372/.516/.737 slash line for the Yankees that season while a 23-year-old Lou Gehrig emerged as a superstar.
Cardinals starter Bill Sherdel walked the bases loaded before Gehrig grounded out to plate a run. That's where the score would stay until the sixth.
For his part, Yankee ace Herb Pennock held the Cardinals out of the hit column after the Bottomley single until the ninth.
