The last part is especially interesting since the glaring weakness of this team, even when Cole was in the rotation, was the starting rotation. What was on paper a glaring weakness has turned out to be a surprising strength-Yankee starters have a 2.69 ERA so far, the best starter ERA since 2003.
Nestor Cortes embodies this welcome surprise, in a way. He was one of the starters with the most to prove after an injury-riddled and poor 2023 performance. He's righted the ship thus far with a 3.50 ERA and 3.19 FIP after shutting out the Marlins for eight innings during his last time out.
