Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles tendon during the Old-Timers' Day game, requiring surgery. The 55-year-old Hall of Famer was agented by Fern Cuza and will undergo surgery within a week. Rivera was playing in the game for the second time since his previous appearance in 2019. He was injured while running in shallow center field, and Roger Clemens commented on Rivera's condition, expressing disbelief at the situation. Rivera previously had an ACL injury in 2012 during batting practice.
During an at-bat by Willie Randolph, Rivera took a step and fell to the ground in shallow center field behind second base.
I think he's at the hospital now. Unbelievable,” said seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens regarding Rivera's injury.
In 2012, Rivera tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while shagging fly balls in batting practice.
Rivera was playing in the Old-Timers' Game for the second time, he hit an inside-the-park homer in 2019.
