Spencer Jones, one of the Yankees' top prospects, has shown remarkable improvements this spring training by refining his swing. After a challenging 2024 season in Double-A, where he struck out 36.8% of the time, Jones emphasized a more fluid motion by focusing on moving his body 'as a unit.' His new stance leads to a seamless plant and swing, reflecting his hard work in the offseason. Standing at 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, he remains a power threat while enhancing his contact ability, making him a player to watch this season.
In 2024, Jones was more upright, and his lead leg was planted before rotating his torso to bring the bat around. It makes the plant, then the swing two very distinct motions—a good example of the lack of fluidity Jones felt.
Jones himself has said he is focused on moving his body 'as a unit,' meaning less of a herky-jerky swing that allows him to avoid no-man's-land and be more decisive at the plate.
But in the case of George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones, two of the Yankees' top prospects who have impressed so far this spring, 'he tweaked his swing' rings true, not hollow.
Luckily, with his enormous 6-foot-7, 225-pound frame, Jones doesn't have to worry about sacrificing power in the pursuit of contact. The ball will still fly.
