The Yankees had their eyes on the crown, but at this point, they could still take the first step toward a championship by qualifying for the postseason.
With a sweep of the Chicago White Sox, including a walk-off in the middle game of the three-game series, and wins in eight of their last nine games, the 1999 Yankees worked their way out of an uncomfortable three-game lead into a more roomy five-game advantage in the American League East.
