The 2024 Sox have plunged to a record of 28-88 through 116 games, two games behind the 1962 Mets. Every few years, a team is billed as a challenger to 40-120, but it's hard to stay historically awful.
The only ballclub close to something worse than 40-120 since 1962 was the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who after 156 games were 38-118. They needed to maintain poor form to not surpass the Mets' record.
