The Mets’ season has continued to struggle despite brief signs of improvement. After taking two of three from the Yankees, the team went 2-5 on the road against the Nationals and Marlins, scoring only four runs across the final four games of that trip and being swept in Miami. In the homestand opener against the Reds, New York managed one run over six innings while a starting pitcher with a 7.01 season ERA limited the lineup. The Mets entered the game with only one hitter above a .700 OPS and were unable to overcome an early deficit. New York has been held to two runs or fewer in 24 games, going 1-23 in those contests, while performing better when scoring more than two runs per game.
"A calamitous season that looked as though it was finally turning around just one week ago, after taking two of three from the crosstown rival Yankees, plummeted yet again on the road last week when the Mets went 2-5 against the Nationals and Marlins. In the last four games of that trip, which included being swept down in Miami, the Mets combined to score a measly four runs, punctuated by a 4-0 loss on Sunday while Juan Soto battled an illness."
"Then came Monday's series and homestand opener against the Cincinnati Reds, where a lineup that entered the day with just one hitter with an OPS over .700 (AJ Ewing) was held to one run over six innings by a starting pitcher, Nick Lodolo, who had a 7.01 season ERA. Behind starting pitcher Nolan McLean's second-straight dud, they never had a chance in a 7-2 loss."
"We had pitches to hit, but he made pitches when he needed to, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. We created traffic here and there, but we got down early, and then it's just a different ballgame. New York has now recorded 24 games already this season in which they have been held to two runs or fewer."
"To no surprise, the Mets are 1-23 in those games, compared to a 21-9 mark when scoring more than two runs per game. They were held to just 11 hits in the sweep to the Marlins, marking the second time this season that the Mets have had a three-game stretch in which they have recorded such a paltry output. There have only been 31 instances in franchise history in which the team has recorded fewer hits over a three-game span."
