Mets notes: Reed Garrett to IL, Francisco Alvarez ahead of schedule | amNewYork
Briefly

Reed Garrett will go on the 15-day injured list due to elbow inflammation and will receive a cortisone injection, followed by a brief shutdown. An MRI showed only inflammation, suggesting a likely minimum-term absence rather than structural damage. Garrett had logged 52.1 innings with a 3.61 ERA, 62 strikeouts and a 1.223 WHIP while experiencing difficulty recovering between outings. Catcher Francisco Alvarez suffered a right-thumb UCL sprain on Aug. 17 and was placed on the 10-day injured list last Tuesday. Alvarez is participating in batting practice and could begin minor-league rehab games as soon as Wednesday or Thursday.
We use this guy a lot, Mendoza said. As of late, the past week or so the past couple of weeks even on days when people thought he was available, we were staying away from him because he was having a hard time.
I couldn't believe it [when] somebody sent me a video of him hitting here, back at Citi Field [on Sunday], Mendoza said. I was like, There's no way this guy is swinging the bat.' That's pretty impressive there.
