Reliever Jake Diekman was designated for assignment by the New York Mets, ending an inconsistent year in Queens with a 5.63 ERA in 43 appearances and a 1.469 WHIP.
Diekman was signed by David Stearns based on a strong half-season with the Tampa Bay Rays last year, but his recent performance made him too challenging of a reclamation project.
In a move corresponding to Diekman's assignment, the Mets called up right-hander Matt Gage from Triple-A Syracuse, who has shown promising performances with previous teams like the Astros and Blue Jays.
