After turning down his $6.75 million player option after being unable to secure a multi-year deal, Adam Ottavino rejoins the Mets on a 1/$4.5 million deal. His option contained deferred money, so he may not be as bad off as it appears on first glance. But it works out well for the Mets, who bring back a veteran arm who has served them well the past two years. Also, it still leaves roughly $6 million left for the Mets to add another player, assuming Andy Martino's earlier reporting of the Mets having around $10 million budgeted for players this year is correct.
Ottavino had a solid 3.21 ERA in 61.2 IP for the Mets last year. But that came with a 4.52 FIP, suggesting that he was fortunate with his results. Ottavino had an ugly 4.29 BB/9 number last year but that was made up for some with an outstanding 56.3 GB%, his highest since 2016. He finished the year with a 2.28 ERA and a 1.229 WHIP over his final 27.2 IP. But that also came with a 4.05 FIP. Ottavino will be in his age-38 season in 2024.
