Francisco Alvarez ready to make good on lofty Mets promise
Briefly

Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is determined to enhance his hitting skills for the 2025 season after struggling offensively in previous years. Despite having a strong reputation for power, his batting average was low. Alvarez acknowledges that he needs better plate discipline, having particularly struggled against breaking pitches. He attributes part of his challenges to a torn ligament but remains optimistic about his breakout potential. Alvarez is committed to changing his approach and is working closely with hitting coaches to see improvements this upcoming season.
I'm working on a lot of things in my hitting. ... I have changed a lot of things, so I'm going to have more plate discipline, and I'm going to have better numbers, too.
I learned a lot from last year, so it's going to be way different this year.
He was particularly weak against sliders, and it is no mystery that he saw a slider 22.4 percent of the time in 2023 and 27.8 percent of the time in 2024.
Alvarez, swings hard - hitting coach Eric Chavez would like him to be more selective.
