Canning injures ankle in latest blow to Mets' staff
Briefly

Mets pitcher Griffin Canning left a game against the Atlanta Braves in the third inning due to a left ankle injury sustained during a non-contact play. He had performed well prior to his injury, striking out three batters and allowing only one hit. Canning was assisted off the field after exhibiting immediate pain and discomfort. The incident adds to the Mets' pitching woes, as they have already dealt with injuries to other key pitchers, including ace Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea, who is undergoing rehabilitation.
Canning, 29, immediately began hopping on his right leg and took only a couple of steps before dropping onto the field with his left leg elevated.
Catcher Luis Torrens signaled for time and assistance before Allen was thrown out at first by Francisco Lindor.
Canning's injury is the latest blow for a suddenly depleted Mets pitching staff. Ace Kodai Senga is on the injured list after suffering a right hamstring strain.
Mendoza and president of baseball operations David Stearns said they hope Manaea, who received a cortisone shot, can resume his rehab next week.
