Inspired by his childhood idols, McCarty focused on growth and soaked up insights from experienced players like Charlie Ward. His rookie year was about preparation and understanding the game rather than immediate success, highlighting the significance of mentorship in professional sports.
On the planes, I would sit next to Charlie Ward, and he would always give me little tidbits about the game and how to approach different situations.
For me, it was a time of learning and soaking in everything I could from those veteran players, especially from Larry and Patrick.
