Winnie Greco, an adviser to New York City Mayor Eric Adams' reelection campaign, handed cash to reporter Katie Honan by placing an envelope inside an open bag of Herr's Sour Cream & Onion ripple potato chips. The envelope contained one $100 bill and multiple $20 bills. The exchange occurred across the street from a campaign event while they walked through a Whole Foods. Honan initially thought the bag held a snack and contacted Greco to return the money; Greco said she had already left the area and apologized, calling it 'a culture thing.' The campaign suspended Greco following the transaction.
The advisor, Winnie Greco, handed a wad of cash to a reporter from local news outlet The City in an open bag of Herr's Sour Cream & Onion ripple potato chips, the outlet reported on Wednesday. There was one $100 bill and multiple $20 bills in an envelope inside the chip bag, according to The City. The exchange happened across the street from one of Mayor Eric Adams' reelection campaign events as Greco and the reporter, Katie Honan, walked through a Whole Foods.
"I can't take this, when can I give it back to you?" Honan texted Greco. "I make (sic) a mistake," Greco replied. "I'm so sorry. It's a culture thing. I don't know. I don't understand. I'm so sorry. I feel so bad right now. I'm so sorry, honey." In an interview, Greco told The City that she was just trying to be Hanon's friend. "I just wanted to be her friend," Greco added. "I just wanted to have one good friend. It's nothing."
