Staten Island shipyard explosion leaves one civilian dead, 34 FDNY members hospitalized with serious injuries | amNewYork
A fire and subsequent explosion occurred at the Richmond Industrial Complex at 3075 Richmond Terrace on May 22 shortly after 3:30 p.m. Fire Department units responded to a reported fire confined to the basement of a small structure behind a shipping dock. Firefighters discovered two people trapped. Additional units were called in for firefighting and victim searches, and a blast followed. One civilian died and FDNY personnel recovered the body. Thirty-four firefighters and EMS personnel were seriously wounded, most of them on a nearby barge and on and around the dock. A fire marshal suffered a brain bleed and fractured skull and was hospitalized in critical condition, intubated and medicated while doctors monitor swelling.
