New Zealand secured their spot at the 2026 World Cup by defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the Oceania confederation qualifying final. This victory marks the All Whites' third attendance at the World Cup, previously qualifying in 1982 and 2010. New Caledonia still has a chance to qualify through a playoff process. Notably, New Zealand's captain Chris Wood was injured during the match, which saw Michael Boxall and Kosta Barbarouses step up to score. Boxall described the team's relief and acknowledged New Caledonia's strong defensive efforts, especially by their goalkeeper.
When the goal went in I think I was a bit more relieved than anything. Fair play to New Caledonia, they made it pretty hard work for us.
Boxall met Francis de Vries' corner at the far post and headed it home. Everyone's reaction when the ball finally went into the back of the net was incredible.
