Semyon Varlamov, the New York Islanders' veteran goaltender, had two knee replacement surgeries, as disclosed by head coach Patrick Roy. The 37-year-old has been absent from games since November 29, 2024, and had not worked with the team all season until recently emerging at the end of practice to face shots. Roy acknowledged the difficulty of knee replacements for a goaltender but praised Varlamov's work ethic and dedication. Varlamov joined the Islanders in 2019 and was their primary goaltender during consecutive Stanley Cup semifinal runs in 2020 and 2021 before Ilya Sorokin became the franchise's top choice. With New York, Varlamov compiled a 76-63-21 record across 173 games with a .916 save percentage. The Islanders signed David Rittich as backup during Varlamov's absence.
