""Seems like we're in a dire situation," he wrote Monday on social media when asked about his apparent change of heart."
""We welcome this primary challenge and look forward to a rigorous debate about the type of serious leadership required to deliver for the people of Brooklyn and the nation," a Jeffries spokesman said in a statement."
Chi Ossé, 27, filed Federal Election Commission paperwork to challenge Hakeem Jeffries for New York's 8th Congressional District. Ossé earlier said it would take a "dire situation" to convince him to run and later wrote "Seems like we're in a dire situation" on social media. Jeffries, 55, is House minority leader and has represented the district since 2013; he is a moderate who ran unopposed in five of seven primaries and wins comfortably in the heavily Democratic district. A Jeffries spokesman welcomed the primary challenge as a debate about serious leadership. Ossé is the City Council's youngest member, represents the 36th District, joined the Democratic Socialists of America, and has clashed with mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani over the planned challenge.
