New Zealand's national football team, under coach Darren Bazeley, achieved significant success by defeating New Caledonia 3-0, securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup. The match showcased both challenges and triumphs, particularly highlighted by a pivotal goal from Michael Boxall after a tough first half. Despite the early withdrawal of captain Chris Wood due to injury, the team found resilience and ultimately finished the game with a commanding scoreline. This victory marked an important milestone for New Zealand, making it their first World Cup appearance since 2010.
"It's not great for us losing our captain and our goalscorer. It was a difficult thing for the team but they came through so well," said New Zealand's English coach Darren Bazeley.
"When the goal went in I think I was a bit more relieved than anything. Fair play to New Caledonia, they made it pretty hard work for us," Boxall said.
"Everyone's reaction when the ball finally went into the back of the net was incredible."
