Minor league hockey in Bridgeport, Connecticut has operated since 2001, but the New York Islanders affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders, will move to Hamilton, Ontario for the 2026-27 AHL season. The relocation follows the team’s elimination from the Calder Cup Playoffs and the subsequent move north. The move is framed as important for player development, providing a training ground for future professionals. In Bridgeport, minor league hockey is described as lacking success, with weak attendance at Total Mortgage Arena. The team averaged just over 3,500 fans per night and ranked near the bottom in AHL attendance, leading to a name change in 2021 to try to attract fans. Ownership later decided to relocate after years of a stale product.
"Fans drive play and without fans in the seats it is very difficult for and organization to be functional. The lack of attendance at Total Mortgage Arena has been highlighted for years. In 2021, the team even changed names from their famed "Sound Tigers" to theIslanders to attempt to generate new fan interest. After two dozen years of a stale product along the Long Island Sound, Islanders ownership, with help from new interest up north, decided it was time to move."
