"Just before noon, the 30-year-old mother walked into the water holding the baby. The water was up to her chest, O'Donnell said. As they rushed to her aid, he called 911. "I go, 'Kevin, take my stuff - I gotta go in there,'" Pinsdorf told the Post. He added that the baby's head was almost submerged in the water at that point. He had to rush to get the woman and the child to safety."
Several retired New York police officers volunteered at a College Point Halloween parade when they heard screaming and were called to the East River. A 30-year-old woman walked into the water holding her 5-month-old baby, with water reaching her chest. One former officer, Paul Pinsdorf, entered the water after calling 911 and found the baby's head nearly submerged. The woman resisted as Pinsdorf reached her, but he managed to grab both the mother and the infant and pull them toward shore. Kevin O'Donnell praised Pinsdorf for pulling them out and bringing them to safety.
