"We avoided a major disaster here," said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson at a news conference."
"And all the side of the building just fell. It was crazy. All you see is smoke," Freeman said."
A massive brick chimney running 20 stories collapsed after an explosion at a Bronx public housing building, sending tons of debris onto a sidewalk, the building's playground and the surrounding street. The blast occurred just after 8 a.m. and officials are investigating whether a gas leak or boiler work caused the explosion. Falling bricks ripped air conditioners from windows and left a large pile of debris that rescue teams searched with a dog. Inspectors are checking foundations and impacted apartments for structural soundness. Some residents were evacuated and services were offered at a nearby community center. City leaders confirmed no reported injuries or deaths and said repairs will be made.
