A box truck driver was arrested and charged in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn that killed an off-duty NYPD officer. Carlos Almanzar Toribio, 30, was driving the box truck with no license plate. He faces charges including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and operating an unregistered vehicle, among other charges. It is not known whether Toribio was taken into custody on Wednesday or Thursday. The off-duty officer was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. Carlos Almanzar Toribio, 30, was driving the box truck with no license plate and has been charged with leave the scene of an accident-resulting in death and operating an unregistered vehicle, among others, police said.
It's not known if Toribio was taken into custody sometime on Wednesday or on Thursday. The off-duty officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The NYC PBA posted on X (formerly Twitter) confirming the officer's death: "Devastated by the loss of our brother following an off-duty motorcycle crash in Brooklyn this morning. Please join us in praying for his family, friends and co-workers as they deal with this unimaginable loss," the tweet said.
