Three visitors from Utah tragically drowned in the Kern River while attempting to rescue a friend who became trapped in a whirlpool during a canyoneering trip.
The incident occurred on August 23, when Jeannine Skinner rappelled into the river and was caught in a powerful whirlpool, causing two others to jump in for a rescue.
According to family, a large log or rock likely caused a circular current that trapped the hikers, highlighting the dangerous conditions of the Kern River.
Despite the efforts of others on the expedition who tried to revive them, the three hikers sadly succumbed to the perilous waters of the river.
