New York is initiating design and engineering work for the Interborough Express, a new light-rail line linking Brooklyn and Queens along 14 miles of a currently underutilized freight railway. Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $166 million state investment for the initial phase, which is part of a larger projected cost of $5.5 billion. This line will connect 17 subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road, and over 40 bus routes, addressing the need for efficient transit between the boroughs. The project involves significant infrastructure preparations, including utility relocations and construction of bridges.
The Interborough Express would offer a Brooklyn-Queens connection to 17 subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road and more than 40 bus routes.
Hochul said the route's layout is central to the city's growth outside of Manhattan.
Now, Manhattan is a lovely place, but why did people envision a world where you had to go there first to be able to come out to another borough?
The proposed route involves preparing the freight corridor for use as a light-rail system through the relocation of utilities and construction of new structures.
