An arctic-influenced, fast-moving clipper and a weak low over southern Canada will move east into the Great Lakes and the Northeast this evening. Cold air will allow snow to spread from Ohio into Pennsylvania and then into the Northeast. The system lacks moisture, so snowfall amounts will be light across most areas. New York City and Boston can expect only a dusting of sporadic snow, with flakes approaching around 9 p.m. and likely beginning near midnight on New Year's Eve. Farther west, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia may receive about 2 to 4 inches, higher in elevated terrain, before the clipper departs to Canada by Thursday morning.
