"For years, my office pushed and prodded the previous administration, overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, overcoming inertia. I want to congratulate the new administration. They moved quickly to expedite this process."
"The structure, built on the footprint of the demolished empty newsstand, will serve as a place where any of the city's 80,000 delivery workers can rest and recharge figuratively and literally both themselves and their battery-powered bikes in between shifts."
"After all these years, we are fulfilling the promise of better critical infrastructure for delivery workers."
The City Hall Deliverista Hub was officially opened by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, fulfilling a promise made in 2022 for better infrastructure for delivery workers. The hub addresses the needs of approximately 80,000 delivery workers who previously lacked dedicated spaces for rest and device charging. The project faced significant delays due to bureaucratic challenges and community opposition, but progress accelerated under Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration. The hub is built on the site of an abandoned newsstand and aims to support workers during their shifts.
