Mr. Santos has been charged with 23 felonies for his role in a range of schemes involving his personal and campaign finances.
Prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York say that he falsified campaign filings, artificially bolstering his campaign's financial standing with fake donations from relatives and fictional loans. They have also charged him with stealing from donors by repeatedly charging their credit cards without authorization, and dispersing the funds to his and others' campaigns, as well as his own bank account.
