Luis Rubiales, former president of the RFEF, is on trial for sexual assault related to his kiss with footballer Jenni Hermoso after Spain's World Cup victory. Rubiales insists Hermoso consented, describing the moment as spontaneous. In contrast, Hermoso has stated she never gave permission for the kiss, stating it marred a joyful occasion. Video evidence and lip-reading analysis are being considered. Although Rubiales admits to making a mistake, he denies any wrongdoing, leading to significant public protests during the ongoing case.
Mr Rubiales stated he was "absolutely sure" that Jenni Hermoso consented to the kiss, describing it as spontaneous and a part of a thankful moment after the match.
Hermoso has insisted that she never gave permission for the kiss, expressing that the incident tarnished what should have been one of her happiest days.
An expert's lip reading analysis revealed that Rubiales asked Hermoso, "can I give you a kiss?" reinforcing the conflicting narratives about consent surrounding the incident.
Rubiales acknowledged he "made a mistake" and noted his conduct on the podium was inappropriate, recognizing he should have acted in a more formal manner.
