The Geneva Court of Justice has convicted Tariq Ramadan of raping and sexually coercing a woman in 2008, sentencing him to three years in prison.
Mr. Ramadan has always denied the allegations, claiming they stem from a smear campaign, despite the appeals court's ruling being a significant reversal of previous acquittal.
His lawyers criticized the decision as a conviction of a man and not of fact, promising to appeal to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.
This ruling marks the first rape conviction for Tariq Ramadan, who had been heralded as an influential Muslim philosopher before falling from grace amidst #MeToo allegations.
