"Thompson's death on a New York City street on 4 December 2024 both spurred a sprawling manhunt for his killer and stoked public outrage over the practices of the US's for-profit health insurance industry. Following the dispatch's orders, Detwiler and another officer went to the McDonald's. I saw the male sitting at the table there, next to the bathrooms, Detwiler said. The man had on a large coat, brown beanie and blue medical mask, just as the tipster had said."

Police officers initially reacted skeptically to a tip identifying Luigi Mangione and joked about buying a hoagie as a reward. Officer Joseph Detwiler received the tip, went to a Pennsylvania McDonald's with another officer and observed a man matching the tipster's description wearing a large coat, brown beanie and blue medical mask. The man provided identification that was later found to be fake and was asked to lower his mask; Detwiler said he recognized him immediately. Mangione was captured on 9 December 2024 in connection with the 4 December murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione faces state and Manhattan federal charges and has pleaded not guilty, while court proceedings examined whether evidence from the encounter was gathered illegally and defense lawyers sought exclusion.
