OPW summoned before TDs over 336,000 bike shed as documents reveal project delays
Briefly

"We're agreeing to schedule a meeting with the OPW on the 10th of October, and we're doing it on that date, because there is a report to come from The [Comptroller and Auditor General] within a couple of weeks, hopefully on this, which will have information on this matter," said Deputy Brian Stanley, chair of the PAC. This emphasizes the proactive steps being taken to scrutinize the expenses and decisions surrounding the bike shelter.
"The facts that have been put in the media so far seem to indicate that this was a decision made entirely within the OPW itself," remarked Fianna Fáil TD Paul McAuliffe. His statement points to concerns over lack of political oversight in significant spending decisions.
Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien expressed that there should be no secrets regarding accountability, adding that "no one in their right mind" could justify such expenditures on a bicycle shelter. This underscores the absurdity felt by officials and the public regarding the budget allocated.
Mr. McAuliffe noted that public sentiment is strong, stating that citizens are 'really, really angry' about the bike shelter's high cost, indicating potential electoral repercussions for those not involved in the decision-making.
